Theresa Hernandez, APN/CNP is an experienced functional medicine Nurse Practitioner who can see the full picture and emphasizes a healthy gut for a healthy life. Helping each patient to recognize their health potential is always her priority.
Advocate for Patients
Theresa joined our team at Lake Travis Integrative Medicine in 2019 after relocating from Chicago. Her professional and life experiences perfectly complement and strengthen what we can offer our patients. Theresa began her medical career as a Pediatric Nurse at the Pediatric ICU at Rush University Medical Center Chicago in 2002. As the first of 4 children and now a mother of two herself, Theresa has an especially deep devotion to pediatric patients and young families who are looking for guidance with food allergies, autoimmune complaints and issues with detoxification. In 2006 she completed her Masters in Nursing at Rush University and was presented with a prestigious opportunity to join the Nursing Faculty as an Adjunct Professor in the Community Health Department of the College of Nursing. Realizing that she missed the patient-provider connection so deeply, she transitioned her role into a private practice where she was better able to listen to people’s stories, validate their concerns, educate them on their health/illnesses, and encourage them to be an advocate for their own health.
Detective for Root Cause
After learning about Functional Medicine in her experience working with asthma, allergy and immunology patients, Theresa went on to pursue additional training and certification from the Institute for Functional Medicine. With years of managing allergies and autoimmunity with traditional western medicine practices, Theresa knew she had more to offer her patients. She began looking at a more comprehensive picture of health with her patients- using elimination diets, natural allergy and immune support, detoxification and gut recovery protocols. Recognizing the interconnectedness of the body’s systems- she is passionate about providing patients of all ages with comprehensive health support. Theresa’s in depth knowledge of the gut and immunology make her a valuable asset to Dr. Julie’s team. She stresses the importance of a healthy gut for a healthy life, in adults and in our younger generation alike.
Committed Compassion and Education
Before joining our team, Theresa has recognized and valued how essential a patient’s story is to their recovery and health. She is an amazing attentive listener who can then help people translate their story into healthy actions. Providing patients with compassionate support and working with them is a key aspect of her approach. Working with patients on the importance of functional nutrition and living an anti-inflammatory lifestyle are two of her top priorities and she blends it into our LIVE IT approach.
Education is key! Awareness and prevention are essential. Theresa is devoted to educating her patients of all ages and making their medical visits a collaborative effort, filled with laughter, love and compassion.
